The Memorial Series
The concept behind the Memorial Series was developed after visiting the Memorial to Murdered Jews in Berlin. These are mixed media works using precision cut plywood painted with specialist metallic paints. The mica painted boards represent the granite forms that make up the Memorial in Berlin. I further developed the concept to reference other forms of memorials such as cemeteries. Observing them from the air, I came to see them as small cities for the dead where grave sites are side by side along roads in the cemetery, much like homes for the living exist in the suburbs.
The green coloured panels are painted with copper paint finished with a weak acid wash which creates patination. This represents the normal deterioration of metal exposed to the elements, like the plaques on headstones and statues.
